11. Intro to the Motor Centers

In this episode, Kelsey introduces the four motor centers in the Human Design Bodygraph. The motor centers act as energy hubs that fuel movement, action, and sustainability in the Bodygraph. These centers determine how we generate, direct, and utilize energy, and play a defining role in the mechanics of Type.

We’ll look at the unique functions of the Sacral, Root, Solar Plexus, and Ego centers, as well as how their definitions shape the energy dynamics of Generators, Manifestors, Projectors, and Reflectors. This episode sets the stage for a deeper dive into the specific role of each of the four motors and how they manifest for someone depending on if they are defined or undefined along with their connections to other centers.

What's Discussed in this Episode:

  • Intro to the four motor centers: Sacral, Root, Solar Plexus, and Ego
  • Brief review of the Root Center (listen to episode 8 for a deep dive)
  • Understanding the difference between the Sacral center as the main motor in the Bodygraph and the other 3 motors as "conditional" motors
  • Sacral center as the sustainable source of regenerative life force energy
  • Solar Plexus as both motor and awareness center
  • Ego center as the source of willpower
  • How motor center definition relates to Type

generator types are all defined sacrals and the name generator is based on the generative or regenerative properties of the sacral center. It's the only center that consistently can regenerate energy if it's being used correctly and the energy associated with the sacral is life force energy. It's what can sustainably fuel the entire process within the body graph. It powers life in the individual form. and it powers life in the collective. Each of the other motor centers, the ego, the solar plexus, and the root, offer a much smaller amount of fuel that have a specific purpose. That's why I call it a conditional motor. Welcome to the Living Your Design Podcast. I'm your experimentor, Kelsey Rose Torregrinci. This podcast is an audio only release of the full length, in depth Human Design Foundations course I've been teaching over the last several years. It is a no bullshit comprehensive embodied introduction to the human design system that will challenge your ego mind and support you in your process of reuniting with the unique wisdom of your body. In episode one, I speak a bit about the process that led me to releasing this course for free in podcast form. And I offer a few notes that might be useful to contextualize and clarify what you'll hear in this episode and beyond. I recommend giving that short intro episode a listen if you haven't yet. The LYD podcast is part of a larger living body of work, a growing archive of my teachings about consciousness through the languages of astrology and human design, hosted in an online community space where I stay in orbit with my students, mentees, alumni, peers, and collaborators. For more information about how to connect with me and tune into my archives and ongoing live teachings, including how to access the original LID course complete with videos and slides, stay tuned to the podcast or check out patreon.com slash KelseyRosetort. Thank you for tuning into my transmission of Living Your Design. It's a deeply personal and somewhat vulnerable share that I feel honored, humbled, and excited to release into the world. I hope that it helps you remember and come home to yourself. oh going to take a look at the next grouping of centers and that's going to be our four motor centers. This is going to be an overview of the motor centers in the body graph. And then we will have three of the four motor centers, those being the sacral center, the ego center, and the solar plexus center. The other motor center is the root center, but because the root is also a pressure center and was covered in the last unit, we won't be explicitly looking into the root center beyond it being included in this first lecture, which is the motor center overview. What we're looking at when we're looking at the motor centers of the body graph, these four to the bottom right, the root center, the sacral center, the solar plexus, and the ego center is life force energy. which comes from the sacral center. The sacral is the primary motor of the body. It's the main source of fuel and it's the only source of consistent, sustainable fuel. And then we're looking at these three other motor centers, which I will sometimes refer to as the conditional motors or sometimes the minor motors. And I do just want to point out that that's not necessarily language that's commonplace. I I'm pretty sure I've never heard anyone else refer to them as conditional. think that's just how I've oriented to them. Minor motors, maybe some people say that, I'm not sure. So I just want to specify that that's a Kelsey thing and not necessarily a commonplace use of language. Most people, I think just say the sacral center and the non-sacral motors, which works fine as well. The sacral is the center for regenerative life force energy. Generator types are all defined sacrales. And the name generator, the name for that orotype that describes how that auric body moves through the world is based on the generative or regenerative properties of the sacral center. It's the only center that consistently can regenerate energy if it's being used correctly. And the energy associated with the sacral is life force energy. It's what can sustainably fuel the entire process within the body graph. It powers life in the individual form and it powers life in the collective. It allows for us both individually and as a collective to build and sustain things over time. Each of the other motor centers, the ego, the solar plexus and the root, offer a much smaller amount of fuel that have a specific purpose. That's why I call it a conditional motor. Maybe specific motor would be a better word so as to not confuse it with the idea of conditioning. And that is the root center. which we know from the last unit is also a pressure center. It powers the impulse to begin and it's not only a pressure, but also power or fuel or energy to go along with that impulse. It's the ignition to the body graph versus the other pressure center that we looked at in the last unit. The head center is not motorized in any way. It's just a mental pressure with no fuel, but the root is actual fuel along with pressure. Then we have the solar plexus, which is also an awareness center. The solar plexus gives us fuel or energy for the emotional process. It powers the emotional process, which can lead to emotional awareness. So there's both awareness and fuel in the solar plexus. And then we have the ego center, which powers our will. The ego is fuel for how we deal with the material realm, including how we exert our will in our lives. I want to take a moment to talk about the motor centers in relation to type, because whether or not you have motor centers defined and which motor centers defined and whether or not those potentially defined motor centers make it to your throat through channel definition is one of the main primary factors in discerning what aura type you have. So let's break that down. This was visited a little bit in the brief overview of the types in unit two, and it'll be visited a lot more as we actually deep dive into the types in future units. But for now, I just want to kind of circle back to that. As we're going to focus on each of the four motor centers, I want to give this framing of how the motor center determines and affects your aura type. So as mentioned, sacral definition. anyone with a defined sacral center is a generator. This is the only type with consistent access to that regenerative sacral life force energy within your own form. And the mechanics of the sacral center are what the generator aura, strategy, and themes are all based on. So as we go over the sacral center today, it's going to introduce us or deepen us into all of the themes that are associated with the generator type. The open and enveloping aura that generators have is because of sacral definition. The strategy of waiting to respond or being in response is because of the mechanics of the sacral. The signature of satisfaction and frustration is entirely based on the proper use of or the improper use, the distorted use of sacral energy. And so generators Even just overviewing the sacral today is potentially going to give you a lot more depth of understanding around the functionality of your type. And when we circle back to type in a future unit, we'll be talking a lot again about the sacral. Someone who has a sacral defined and no solar plexus defined is what we call a sacral generator. Their strategy is based on sacral response and their authority is based on sacral response. Someone who has both the sacral and the solar plexus defined is what we call an emotional generator. Their strategy is based on sacral response, but their authority comes from the emotional awareness of the solar plexus. Someone who has the sacral and any motor to the throat, so it can be the sacral directly to the throat, it can be the sacral through the G center to the throat, the sacral through the spleen to the throat, or it can be sacral defined, but one of these other motor centers connected to the throat somehow, directly or indirectly. As long as there's sacral definition, there are generator. And if there's also any motor to throat definition, whether it's direct or indirect, that would be a manifesting generator. Manifesting generators are sacral beings who also have a motor to the throat. I'll say a little bit more about that in a moment after I overview the manifestor type. So hopefully you can see in there if you're a generator, a manifesting generator, how your motor definition and potentially for man-gens, your motor to the throat definition makes you a generator or manifesting generator. And then we've tagged on the solar plexus, whether you're a generator or manifesting generator. If you have a defined solar plexus, you're an emotional generator. Otherwise you're a sacral generator. If you're non-sacral and undefined sacral, you're automatically either a reflector, a projector or a manifester. Let's start with manifestors here. So a manifestor is a non-sacral, so undefined sacral center, who does have at least one, it can be more than one, but at least one of these other motors connected to the throat somehow. So that can be the ego or the solar plexus directly to the throat through one of these three directly manifested channels. It can be the ego or the solar plexus by way of g-center to the throat. or it can be the ego, root, and or solar plexus potentially by way of the spleen to the throat. So any non-sacral who has one or more of these other motor centers that somehow has definition reaching the throat is a manifestor. This is the type that draws from an internal energy source, an internal inconsistent energy force and specific conditional energy force to initiate or impact outwards through that manifestation center of the throat. Manifestors again are always nonsacral and their authority is either emotional authority if they have a defined solar plexus or if they don't have a defined solar plexus but they do have a defined spleen, they would be a splenic manifestor, splenic authority. Or if both of those are undefined, that would make them an ego authority. You can't be a manifestor without having one of those three. centers defined because otherwise you wouldn't have energy making it up to your throat. And before I get to reflectors and projectors, I just want to point out that both generators and manifestors, and I believe I'm repeating myself at this point because I believe this has been articulated at least briefly, are considered to be energy types, right? Because their aura function is based on either the presence of consistent sacral energy or motor to throat definition. And in both cases, that definition has such an overwhelming influence on the entire form that it will define and determine the function of that aura as well as the strategy that goes along with it. And the function and strategy of those aura types are based on the usage of energy, on the expenditure of energy, whether that's consistent building sustainable life force energy in the case of the generator. or inconsistent spurts or urges, it's often referred to, of manifested energy in the manifestor. The other two types are referred to as non-energy types, reflectors and projectors. And so the definition in the motors for reflectors and projectors, or I suppose really more so for projectors, does not determine the type in this case. So reflectors, quickly, we know are types that have no beings that have no definition in any of the nine centers. So therefore that includes having no definition in the motor centers. So reflectors have no consistent access to motor energy in their own form. Reflectors are fueled energetically temporarily by transits as well as by sampling the energy from those in their environment. And that temporary fuel is a part of how they operate and perform their auric function. But their auric function is about sampling and reflecting back. sharing their awareness about what it is they're experiencing as they sample the different energy as well as the awareness and resonance and pressure coming in from other centers. The auric function is based on that process of sampling, having awareness, reflecting back, evaluating and sharing. It's not based on energy. So the auric function of reflector has nothing to do with energy. and reflectors will never have a defined energy center in their design because they never have any centers defined except by transit. Okay. Projectors can have motor definition, but those motors will not connect to the throat. And of course it'll never be sacral because if you have a sacral define, you're a generator. So projectors are the non-sacrals who may or may not have another motor center defined, but if they do have it defined, it does not access the throat through their definition. While some projectors have consistent access to minor energy in their form, to one of these inconsistent specific motor sources in their form, the auric function of the projector still has nothing to do with manifesting or generating energy. Sometimes you'll hear people refer to a projector who has either the ego solar plexus or root or any combo of the two or all three defined as energy projectors. I don't often say that just because to me that feels confusing with understanding projectors as a non-energy type. But there are energy projectors and those are projectors who even though their auric function still doesn't have anything to do necessarily with them exerting energy, they do on their own have access to some energy, whether it's through the ego, solar plexus, or root. So the auric function of projectors in their own way but similar to some extent to reflectors is more about the awareness that they're able to gain and offer through being rather than doing, right? So energy types do, awareness types be, and in their being they can offer their awareness around what they're experiencing and what they see either through their sampling aura in the case of the reflector or through their penetrating, deeply absorbing, projecting aura through the projector. That doesn't necessarily mean that understanding the functionality of the four motor centers that we're going to go through in this unit is not important for the reflectors and projectors. It absolutely is because projectors and reflectors, will still experience those centers through conditioning. And that's a part of what you offer in your awareness through your auric functionality. But the function of the projector and the reflector is not about energy in the same way that it is for the manifestor and generator. As a manifestor, my function is to initiate and that requires energy. As a generator, the function of that type is to generate and that requires energy, right? Reflecting and projecting doesn't require energy to be done. There's no fuel necessarily involved with that process besides the fuel that you're absorbing and amplifying. And then the last piece of our little overview here, I wanna once again revisit the body graph as a complete picture and take a look at which aspect of the body graph's functionality we're gonna be zooming in on today. So once again, all movement in the body graph begins in the pressure centers at either end in the head or the root, and it moves towards the throat to be released. On the way to the throat, that pressure is powered by different motors processed through different awarenesses and filtered for resonance. In this unit, we're looking at the way that pressure from the root specifically can be powered by the other three motors, but four motors really, including the root because the root is also a motor center. So we're not talking about in this unit pressure that comes from the head center at all because the pressure that comes from the head center gets to the throat before it would ever be fueled. There's no energy or fuel or motor involved in the process of pressure from the head coming to conceptualization and awareness in the Ajna and being released through the throat. The motor centers only fuel the somatic experience. And again, we're not going to do another video on the root. because we covered the root in the last unit on pressure centers and throat center. But remember that some of these centers have two functionalities. So the root is both a pressure center and a motor center. We will be looking at the solar plexus, which is both a motor center and an awareness center. And we'll briefly revisit the solar plexus when we get to awareness centers. But we're going to do the deep dive of the solar plexus center as a part of the motor center unit. Both the ego and the sacral are only motor centers. They don't have another function, but I did just want to point out that oftentimes people will refer to the ego also as the heart center. And we'll talk about that when we get to the ego center, but it's the same function. It's a motor and that's it. Okay, onto the sacral. for listening to the Living Your Design Podcast.
