29. Intro to Authority As Your Anchor & Filter
In this episode, we begin exploring Inner Authority, which is the foundation of decision making in Human Design. Authority is the anchor and filter through which we experience life’s conditions and conditioning. It’s not something we develop or have to "figure out." It’s the inherent intelligence of the body, always operating beneath the mind’s commentary.
Kelsey examines the difference between conditioning and authority, how authority arises from our defined centers, and why the mind is never the place from which to make personal decisions. This episode invites you to begin recognizing the voice of your authority- the steady pulse of inner knowing that guides you back to alignment, over and over again.
What's Discussed in this Episode:
- What Inner Authority is and how it functions as your anchor amidst conditioning
- How the defined centers act as filters for life’s experiences
- Authority as a somatic process, not a mental one
- The hierarchy of authorities
- Why pressure and the mind are never sources for our authority
- The distinction between Inner Authority and Outer Authority
- How conditioning pulls us away from our authority and how awareness brings us back
- Recognizing the paradox: your authority is both the simplest truth and the hardest thing for the mind to surrender to

All these mental constructs that we apply to our learning of human design is sort of like giving our mind training wheels as it's learning to become the passenger. These are training wheels that help us keep authority underneath the umbrella of type. Emotional authority does not trump your aura.
Your aura is the base octave of your experience.
Even though your aura is your energy body and is very ethereal and subtle compared to physical material reality in the way we perceive it, it's the most dense of all of the concepts within human design that we study.
Your aura is the most non negotiable aspect of you and it carries all those smaller, more subtle influences of your center definition and your channels and your lines and all of those below the surface aspects of human design. But the aura is everything.

Speaker A:We're going to orient to authority as a concept, to the different types of authority, and to this idea of authority being the filter for your conditioning and the anchor for your trip. So first let's revisit the concept of conditioning in human design.
We know that we experience conditioning wherever we are undefined or open in our Body graph. And in living your design, we are looking primarily at that on a center's level. But it also applies to the gates and the channels in our design.
So let's both revisit and also sort of reorient in a way to this concept of conditioning as it will pertain to authority. Conditioning is all about the conditions of our lives. What's constant is our definition.
What's conditional is what we're taking in through our openness. And we're all designed to be conditioned to experience this fluctuation of circumstances in our lives.
And those fluctuating circumstances enter our reality through the lenses of our undefined centers, channels, and gates. This openness is where we are conditioned. It's where we experience the movie of our lives. It's the mystery, the potential.
And the definition is the consistent part of us that is experiencing these conditions. Through our definition, we experience, observe, assimilate, integrate the conditions or the conditioning or the circumstances of our life.
The definition is the filter for the conditions. And authority is the definition in your design that functions as the primary filter and the anchor for your experience.
Another way we could define authority is that it's a practical, simplified orientation to the larger and more complex principle that all of your definition is the filter for all of your openness, for all of the conditions and all of the conditioning.
With the knowledge of human design, your mind is able to dissect and categorize your experience according to the nine centers, whether you have them defined or undefined. And you can observe over time the fixed tendencies of your definition.
And the not self strategies of your openness that seek to derail you from your flow. Your flow being your auric function, your strategy, the way that your form naturally wishes to move through the world.
So passenger consciousness is us watching everything that's happening. And what human design, with the knowledge of human design, offers us as passengers.
Us being our minds that are the passengers witnessing the experience of the body. What human design offers us is this ability to watch it within this framework, in a pointed way.
Because there's more awareness of what it is we're seeing when we have the structure, for example, of the centers, among other things, to orient our watching towards. So this is passenger consciousness, right?
That's what this, this knowledge of the centers, everything we've covered up to this point, type, strategy and centers is. Is meant to support us in is more developed awareness in our passenger consciousness. So the mind is the passenger.
However, there's also form principle. And what passenger consciousness is watching is form principle. That's where the life actually is, that's what's actually happening.
And then the passenger, the mind, is simply watching it. So everything we just noted here about how the mind, the passenger, is able to dissect and categorize our experience can be useful at times.
And that's why we have tools like the voices of not self, for instance, so that the passenger can catch, oh, I'm in my not self conditioning of this center right now, for instance. And your body already knows how to operate without any mental calculations needed.
There's no contributions that need to come from the mind in order for your body to move in the exact way that's correct for it.
Instead, your definition works together just inherently as a filter for the conditions that you're taking in through your openness, without any necessary direction or interference from the mind. And the defined center with the greatest pull or weight or somatic sensation is the one that ultimately speaks for them all.
And this is your authority. And here I have listed the defined center.
But as we near the end of this unit, we'll start to look at some of the more rare authorities that don't actually have to do with a single defined center or a defined center at all. For instance, Lunar authority, which we talked about a little bit already in the reflector lecture.
And then environmental or outer authority for mental projectors functions a bit differently than just the strongest center in the body, because mental projectors don't have somatic, in other words, below the throat definition at all. But we're going to start with this idea, this simplified idea of authority being the defined center with the greatest pull.
Because for most of our authorities, emotional, sacral, splenic, ego and g, that's the concept behind it. And then once we understand that, we can apply this concept of authority to those, those other authorities.
So passenger consciousness, we're watching, but form principle is what's happening in our body already. And so we all, each of us already has a center in our body that is leading the way. That is the authorities.
As we go through these authority lectures, really what we're doing is adding another layer to expand and further develop our ability to watch what is already happening in the body and in the life. Here's a visual metaphor for what the authority is. Here's you just falling through space and time and this space around you.
All this context that, that you're flying through or falling through in your life is your trip, all the context, everything you experience. And your authority is this boulder that you're tied to.
Now, really, authority isn't Something outside of you, unless you have lunar authority, in which case you could make a case where it's both inside of you and outside of you. And I suppose the same for mental protectors. When we get their mental authority, or sometimes referred to as environmental or outer authority.
But for the vast majority of us, 96, 97, 98, 97 ish percent of the population, our authority is something rooted very much and only inside of us.
But for the purposes of this metaphor, we can think of it as like this weight that's falling through time and space with us on the trip that is our life, that is our incarnation, that is our experience of consciousness and aliveness in this particular form, with this particular personality consciousness.
It has its own sort of gravitational pull, it is its own weight that affects not only how we fall through space and time, like the direction of it, the rate of it, the speed of it, but also how we perceive that fall through space and time, or that flight through space and time that is our trip. So sometimes you'll hear the words the hierarchy of authority. I use those words as well.
The idea here is that this is a hierarchy based on each form's access to consistent and defined somatic knowing. But it's not a superiority hierarchy in any way. No one's authority is better or worse than the others.
Your authority is perfect for you because it is you words that I find myself lately preferring to. The hierarchy of authority is the authority process of elimination.
Because really what we're doing here is we're saying that the first of these centers that you have defined is your authority. So it's a process of elimination. Do you have defined solar plexus? That's where we start in our process of elimination.
And if you do, then you have emotional authority. If you don't have a defined solar plexus, but you do have a defined sacral, then you have sacral authority.
And so this is going to be the case for these first five centers for the solar plexus, the sacral, the spleen, the ego, and the G. Anyone who has a defined solar plexus has what we call emotional authority or solar plexus authority. That can be generators, projectors, or manifestors. Next in this authority process of elimination is the sacral center.
So if you are undefined in the solar plexus, but defined in the sacral, then you have sacral authority. And that is only applicable to generators, because any sacral being is a generator.
If you have an undefined solar plexus and an undefined sacral, but you have a defined spleen, then you are a splenic projector or manifestor. You're a projector or manifester with splenic authority.
And so already here we're starting to get into smaller and smaller percentages of the population, right?
So by a long shot, emotional and sacral authority are far more common because almost 50% of the planet is defined in the emotional center across these three types. And of the 50% who are not, 70% of those are sacral beings, generators.
So we're, we're in, we're already in something like it's 30% non sacrals on the planet. And about half of those are emotional non sacrals.
So when we get down to this, this, this third potential authority in the hierarchy of authority, or the process of elimination of authority, we're already within the minority of 15% of the population. And it generally gets rarer and rarer as we go through this list with some exceptions to that rule.
So if you're undefined, solar plexus, sacral, but you have a defined spleen, then you have splenic authority. If all three of those centers are undefined, but you have a defined ego, then then you have ego authority.
And we tend to refer to ego authority as either ego projected or ego manifested based on the channel that defines the ego, because one of them in particular makes you a manifestor. So it functions a bit differently. And we'll talk about that when we get to that lecture.
If you're undefined in all of these centers below the G, but you have a defined G and anything above the, the G defined as well, then you have G authority, which is more commonly referred to as self projected authority or projected or G projected authority, which is only applicable to projectors, right? Because if you have the G but nothing below it, then you do not have a motor, so you cannot be a manifestor or a generator.
And if you have nothing below the throat defined, so you don't have the g, ego, spleen, sacral or solar plexus, then you either are a mental projector who only has head, ajna or ajna throat, or all three.
It can be any combination of two or three of these head, ajna and throat centers, or you are a reflector with no center definition at all, and you have lunar authority. And just a couple notes on the body graph here.
The mind is never an authority, so we're never going to have an authority made out of head and ajna or ajna and throat definition alone.
This is why mental projectors have Something a bit more complicated that involves their environment and what they're taking in below the throat, because the body has to be a part of the experience. Because a huge functionality of the authority is how the body moves as the life while the mind watches.
So a mental projector's definition, even though their only definition is up here above the throat, in the realm of the mind, that cannot function as authority because it is the mind. And the mind is never an inner authority.
It can be an outer authority to others, but it is not meant to function on its own as the authority for that mental projector themselves. We'll talk way more about that.
The throat can be an authority on its own because it, the functionality of the throat is about expressing from what's inside to the outside. It's. It doesn't have a functionality of anchoring you to your own body. It has more to do with.
Similarly to the mind, it has more to do with how we articulate and communicate and operate and collaborate on the external shared plane, which is the conditioning field. And then also you'll notice that the one somatic center. Sometimes I'll use the word somatic center to talk about any center below the throat.
So these first five that we've gone over, plus the root, the one somatic center that does not function as authority on its own is the root center. And in, in both the cases of the root, mental pressure is not an authority and pressure alone.
Even though pressure in the root is a physical somatic pressure, pressure alone cannot be an authority.
But you'll notice that the root cannot be defined unless it is defined in connection to one of these first three centers that are at the top of our hierarchy of authority. So if you have a defined root, then you automatically have a defined root in connection with at least one of these authority centers.
So you might have root, solar plexus definition, in which case the root is a natural part of the process of your emotional authority, for instance. So let's look at these brackets first. And, and just to note that these percentages are very approximate.
Just want to sort of paint the picture of the, the, the bigger picture of the population and how we as a society orient to authority within the body based on definition and the. The commonality or rarity of that. So I've got four different categories within this.
These are the four authorities that are based on the semantics of a single center. That's gonna be these first four. They're based on the somatics of a single center within the body.
So we've got emotional Authority, sacral authority, splenic authority, and ego authority, all are based primarily on the somatics of one single center for ego authority.
When we get there, we are gonna talk directly about two centers, but you could still frame it as the ego authority is based primarily on the functionality of a single center. We'll talk about that more when we get there.
And then all four of those authorities also belong to this category that says based on a somatic center below the throat. When we get to self projected authority or G authority, we are talking about a somatic center below the throat still.
But for G authority, it is specifically the connection of the G to the throat that offers that version of a projector their authority. And then we've got process oriented is what I'm calling it.
Very small percentage of the population, less than three, two and a half ish percent environmental authority and one to one and a half percent reflectors, Lunar authority.
And I say process oriented here, which it might even be a bit of an overgeneralization, because for environmental authority it may not be so much a process, but there is something happening that's sort of alchemical for the environmental authority projector, where their defined mind and what they're taking in from their environment through all the openness below their throat is alchemizing in a way to give them an authority. So it's a process, but maybe not a cycle. The same way it is for lunar authority with the lunar cycle.
And then I also have a little note in green up here that emotional authority is also process oriented in a way, because the emotional center has to go through its wave and then have these three ego authority, specifically ego authority in manifestors, self projected authority in projectors, and environmental authority in projectors. These authorities rely on the frequency of expression of the voice.
So there's something having to do with the throat and expression and the frequency of the expression that is the anchor for those authority types. I don't expect really any of this to like, land or stick with you on the onset here.
This is what we're going to be teasing out throughout these lectures. I just find it useful to kind of paint the picture.
And even without going too, too much into it, see where there's some overlap and some distinctions between different forms, different individuals, ways of moving through time and space with the authority of their own body. Another way of breaking down authority from this bird's eye view is looking at it specifically by type.
So your aura is primary here and authority is secondary. To say that one is primary and one is secondary Is already a little bit of a mental construct, right?
Because it's all what's happening, it's all what's working together and automatically happening underneath the umbrella of form principle.
All these mental constructs that we apply to our learning of human design is sort of like giving our mind training wheels as it's learning to become the passenger, as it's accepting to surrender to its role as the passenger. So the training wheels in this case of type and aura strategy, our primary authority is secondary.
These are training wheels that help us keep authority underneath the umbrella of type. Emotional authority does not trump your aura. Your aura is the base octave of your experience.
Even though your aura is your energy body and is very ethereal and subtle compared to physical, material reality in the way we perceive it. It's the most dense of all of the concepts within human design that we study.
Your aura is the most dense, tangible, heaviest, non negotiable aspect of you.
And it carries all those smaller, more subtle influences of your center definition and your channels and your lines and all of those below the surface aspects of human design. But the aura is. Is everything.
Everything fits inside of that closed and repelling aura if you're a manifestor, inside of that open and enveloping aura, if you're a generator, inside of your pointy, focused aura if you're a projector, and inside of your sampling and resilient aura if you're a reflector. So noting here again, training wheels for the mind that, for example, if you're a projector, your emotional system will not override your strategy.
Your aura's natural strategy of waiting for invitation. If you're an emotional generator, that emotional system does not override your strategy of response.
So in other words, projectors and generators do not initiate from emotional authority.
And if an emotional generator or projector were to think that they should be initiating something because their emotional system is communicating that to them, that's actually misinterpretation of the mind trying to sort of hijack what it thinks emotional authority is about.
So again, these training wheels here of saying type aura is primary, authority is secondary, is there to help you understand that what's already happening without any doing or rationalization on the part of your passenger, your mind, is that your. Your.
The shape of your aura, your aura, and the way your aura interacts with energy around it and the world around it and other auras around it, that's the primary mode of your existence.
And then within that there's a center, in most cases that is helping you to operate with A level of clarity or awareness or confidence within the more nuanced details of how you engage with response or initiation and informing or invitation or waiting your lunar cycle. Your authority has to be honored within the integrity of your aura. There's a very succinct way of saying what I just fumbled through a bit.
It cannot and does not override response, invitation, et cetera. Your authority is the most trusted source of somatic wisdom in your body and your anchor for this wild trip that is life.
It helps you to navigate when and how to tap into and utilize energy, awareness, resonance, pressure, et cetera, from outside of yourself. Your authority cannot be argued or negotiated with. The mind will try, but it's. It's a given. It is form, principle. It is what's happening.
And your authority, on a similar note, is not fully understandable, quantifiable, reasonable, or explainable from the mental plane. It's the wisdom of the body.
As you're learning about authority, just as anything else that you have learned or will learn within the knowledge of human design, your mind is going to grapple with the concept as it's taking it in. This is very natural.
Once your mind is starting to be able to see the truth of your authority as a passenger, your mind as passenger sees the truth of your authority. The mind is going to start to wrestle with that truth a bit, right?
It's going to try to argue or negotiate or understand or quantify reason with, explain in words. This also is natural. However, that is not the.
The end result, and that is not the organic relationship between mind and authority that is available to us. Here's a quote from Ra.
Once the mind has been freed from decision making, it can take its rightful place in our life as a valued and valuable witness of our life and outer authority for others. In other words, your authority is you, and your mind is the you that's witnessing you. Right?
Your mind is the you that you think you are, but it's actually the you that's witnessing the you that is your form, which is your life, your mind. The witness, the passenger can support you in functioning as an outer authority for others. And it's not just.
Just your mind that's an outer authority for others. Okay? It's all of you, including the you that is your body, that is your definition, that is your frequency, that is your aura.
The outer authority is your frequency, but with the capacity of the mind to witness and thus articulate and share essentially about what it's like to be you, to have this frequency. So the outer authority is the combination of you and the witness of you that's watching you.
But to others, an outer authority is a conditioning force that gets to be filtered through one's own self, authority and anchor. Okay? So everything we're taking in from the other has to get filtered through our definition, the truth of our frequency.
That's that boulder that makes sure that we stay on our trip instead of getting lost on someone else's trip or on the trip of homogenized society, AKA the Maya. The human design experiment is full of contradiction here, right?
Like, for example, me teaching you how to be you right now, or this like, mumble jumble that we just went through. Maybe you followed, maybe you got lost in it. The contradiction that your authority is you and your mind is the you witnessing you.
Here's another contradiction that we're going to encounter in the authority lectures. I'm going to tell you and you're going to hear others say that some authorities are more complicated to figure out than others.
For example, G authority, self projected authority, mental authority, lunar authority, even maybe ego authority to an extent, specifically ego manifested versus ego projected authority.
They might seem a little less obvious to the mind at the get go as we're exploring this concept of authority compared to, say, emotional authority, or sacral authority, or splenic authority, or even solar plexus authority I myself sometimes refer to as more complex, are more complicated than the other ones because the wave exists over time, which is inherently more complex than sacral or splenic in the moment response or intuition. You'll hear me say, you'll hear others say that some authorities speak more softly than others.
In our process of elimination or our hierarchy, emotional sacral splenic goes in that order, because in that order is how we feel them, like the density, the volume at which we feel them.
So a lot of times you hear people talk about the splenic voice as being very soft, especially compared to the sacral and the solar plexus, or the solar plexus experience being the loudest. And there's reason for these articulations. They help us understand it from the level of mind. But also, here's the contradiction.
Your authority is the simplest and most obvious thing thing when you are aware of it, because it is you.
So if you have a quieter authority, like the spleen or a quote, more complicated authority, like G authority, self projected authority, mental projector, outer environmental authority, or lunar authority as a reflector, I just want to right away say, like, the thing that might have to grapple with understanding it is your Mind, not you. You already understand it because it is hard already happening. It is already the process that is within you, guiding you, anchoring you.
It's already your rock. You just are going to get to learn through your human design experiment, your mind, your passenger.
The Witness is going to get to learn through your human design experiment how to watch it more keenly and surrender to it more fully.
Another thing that sometimes makes it more difficult for the mind to understand these rarer authorities that I listed is simply that less people have them. You know, I. I have a defined solar plexus, so I'll be able to speak from personal experience on emotional authority.
The very first one that we'll touch on much more easily and perhaps more accurately than any of the other ones, because it's my experience. I have a defined spleen. So even though it's not my authority, I'll be able to speak, speak about my experience of splenic definition.
Same with ego and G to throat.
I have that definition in my design, so I can call on my own somatic sensory experience with those things in combination with what I've learned, with what I've witnessed and heard from in others who have those authorities that I don't have a defined sacral, I don't have a defined heterogene, and I don't have no definition like a reflector.
So, you know, for each thing that isn't emotional, I'm not speaking with any authority other than what I've been able to witness and sort of make sense of. And so, as with all things in human design, you know, trust your own body, especially when we get to your authority.
Trust your own body to filter what I teach, what I say, anything else you read or hear from other experimenters or other teachers. Trust your own body and your own process to pull from those things what is needed for you.
Don't pressure yourself in any not self way to exactly follow, fully believe, completely accept or entirely grasp on a mental level, your authority based on what I share. Okay? For all of us, even fellow emotional authorities who are learning about authority from me, your own experiment is the primary teacher.
This is an orientation. This is the training wheels for the mind to become the passenger. But you have to pedal on that bike in order to learn it.
And you don't have to to figure anything out, right? Okay. Your authority. Let me repeat this one before I move on.
Your authority is the simplest and most obvious thing when you are aware of it, because it is you. It's what's already happening.
And you don't have to figure anything out to operate from your authority because your authority is already operating within you. To quote use your authority. You simply watch.
And this is how the idea of authority being secondary to aura can come in when you align with your Auric strategy, when you watch yourself respond, when you watch yourself wait for invitations, when you watch yourself follow the lunar cycle, when you watch yourself initiate and maybe inform prior to initiating, you become more keen at and intentional with your watching. You begin to notice more adeptly the truth that has always been available to you according to your anchor, your filter, your authority.
And this is how we develop awareness. This is passenger consciousness. This is the Human Design Experiment.
